Later in lab illegal use of iodine to make tri nitrogen iodide – made log books go bang when opened. (with nice violet smoke )
Illicit use of nitric and sulphuric acid to make guncotton.
Only real incident was the cleaning lady that used carbon disulphide (thinking it was acetic acid ) to clean kettle by putting it on gas burner.! Chief chemist wanted to know what smell of SO2 was.
Later made tonnage acetylene (in Northern Ireland) always felt dodgy when in the blast cells at end of pipeline.

I have had the pleasure of attending one of Sidney Alford’s lectures- tremendous fun. highlights included him lighting a piece of plastic explosive and holding it as it burned, before throwing it out of the window. He also announced that he had sent a pipebomb to the PM.
Always worth seeing.
