I keep reading about how army food has improved since my day and how the new ration packs are so much more nutritious than the old compo. So I was fascinated to see in one of the pictures the young soldier, presumably cooking for the whole team as per the text, frying up tinned sausages and spam – a great big plate of tinned spam sliced a quarter of an inch thick then fried. Nope they’re long gone. Beef and Cassava more like. Which produced an earnest squaddie chat that lasted for hours and ended in a fight about what cassava was.

t’was a sad day when they phased out spangles and bacongrill! In fact i sometimes buy the bacongrill in the supermarket for old times sake. (thankfully i’m not that nostalgic and haven’t basha’d up in the back garden to cook it)
