The Secretary of State for Defence (Bob Ainsworth MP) has announced an increase in compensation available to injured service personnel through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
The findings of the review panel chaired by Admiral Lord Boyce, a former Chief of the Defence Staff, have been accepted in full.
Summary of changes;

We have been waiting for something solid to come from the Conservatives in the defence realm. So far they have delivered a half baked ill thought through collection of announcements mostly about ‘slashing civil servant numbers’
With General Sir Richard Dannatt on the team it is hoped that a number of solid policies would start trickling out.

Plumbing new depths is the announcement that the Conservatives would award a university scholarship to all children of service personnel killed whilst on active duty.
Hold on you say, what is so bad about that?
A new premium bottled lager is to be launched in February 2010 to help raise more than £1million a year for forces charities – and to help provide long-term care for our Nation’s Heroes.
Beer Brands is a not for profit organisatrion and is appealing to Service men and women and their families to support this new brand which in turn will support their Comrades, and servicemen from other campaigns that need help.
As is anyone ever needed an excuse to have a beer, but just in case.

The British Government descended to new depths today as it released new criteria to be used when deciding if former members of the Brigade of Gurkhas can settle in the United Kingdom. The regiment moved its main base from Hong Kong to the UK in 1997 and the government had argued that Gurkhas discharged before that date were unlikely to have strong residential ties with the UK. That meant those who wanted to settle in the UK had to apply for British residency and could be refused and deported. After a lengthy campaign and court case, the High Court in 2008 ruled that the existing regulations denying former Gurkhas that retired before 1997 automatic right to stay in the UK were unlawful.
This is the first of what is hoped to be a regular slot, highlighting forces community, voluntary and charity groups.
Holidays 4 Heroes is an informal group of people, including serving and retired personnel from all the UK Armed Forces and civilian supporters. We try to assist serving and former military personnel and their families, in a variety of ways that might otherwise fall outside the remit of the better-known Forces Charities. We work together through an Internet web-site used, mainly but certainly not exclusively, by Army personnel (The ARmy Rumour SErvice or “Arrse” for short – the military have a highly sophisticated sense of humour!).
