The long awaited Fleet Tanker of the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) project has been awarded to Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering of Korea Four of the 200m tankers will be obtained in the £452m deal This is a quick post to which I will probably add to later. In the previous post I asked what the perception of rank inflation was, not the reality. Everyone seemed to agree there was a preponderance of the grown ups but the problem with perceptions is they are often just that. We all observe things and we are all subject to the underlying narrative that the senior ranks are proving harder to [...]
Just been indulging in a spot of number crunching on rank inflation. The common perception, if you read any of the mainstream media, seems to be that senior officer numbers have been outstripping junior officers and other ranks by quite some margin, especially over the last decade. More Admirals than ships, Generals than Regiments, Air Marshalls than Squadrons and bumbling [...]
One year after the Libyan uprising the governments of the United Kingdom and France have announced a further round of defence and security cooperation. The statement in full… UK-France declaration 1. At the Lancaster House Summit, we took the historic decision to raise our defence and security cooperation to unprecedented levels. We took this decision because we are natural partners [...]
Defence is big business and make no mistake, defence contractors are not scared of playing games, or applying subtle (or not so subtle) pressure to make sure they get get their own way. It is fascinating to watch them at work and see the different methods they employ. To see two examples of the art lets look at one maritime [...]
El Presidente is talking nonsense again, the latest claim is that the UK is escalating the tense situation in the South Atlantic by moving nuclear missile armed submarines into the area and because as a matter of routine we simply do not comment on the whereabouts of our Vanguard submarines she has taken this to be the veritable smoking gun, [...]
The basic argument that Rafale was simply cheaper than Typhoon is interesting but without sounding too churlish, this is rather surprising, but reflective of the simple fact that for Dassault, the Indian competition was the last chance saloon. We have discussed the numerous issues around the Rafale win but if it is as simple as price then the Eurofighter partners [...]
This is a regular round up of Parliamentary questions and answers from ministers relevant to defence issues In addition to oral questions, MPs and Peers can ask government ministers questions for written answer. These are often used to obtain detailed information about policies and statistics on the activities of government departments. In the House of Commons ‘ordinary’ questions do not [...]
Have read a number of different views from around the internet so I thought a summary could be interesting. They all sound plausible, with the first one being the most obvious when you think about it. We should stop whining and accept defeat with a bit of dignity. Being a Reliable Arms Dealer This is the most interesting and arguably [...]

A straight reprint from the conclusions and recommendations page Introduction 1. At the outset of our Report, we wish to pay tribute to the UK Armed Forces and civilian personnel who contributed to operations in Libya. They continue to impress us with the courage, dedication and professionalism with which they undertook this operation which we are convinced saved thousands of civilian lives. [...]
The MoD has just published its long awaited replacement for the defence industrial strategy (click the image to download), the snappily titled National Security Through Technology: Technology, Equipment and Support for the UK Defence and Security. Every government has one and although the last one was a reasonable attempt and meeting the conflicting needs of UK Defence and UK Plc [...]
Here is an interesting parliamentary question and answer from the last few days Question Madeleine Moon (Bridgend, Labour) To ask the Secretary of State for Defence pursuant to the answer of 19 January 2012, Official Report, column 940W, on Harrier aircraft, (1) what monetary value was given to the associated support equipment included in the sale of the Harrier aircraft; (2) what the original cost [...]
