Phil Hammond, Secretary of State for Defence has been heckled at this years Conservative Party Conference
The hecklers were former Fusiliers, Colonel Ian Brazier and Captain Joe Eastwood and whilst it is difficult to make out what was said, I don’t expect it was complimentary given one of the best recruited battalions in the British Army, 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, has been disbanded recently as part of Army 2020.
Outside the venue, Sky reported he said;
I am very angry about the fact the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (2RRF), is to be disbanded. We were not in the disbandment plan. We were substituted at the last minute, for reasons we have yet to be told. Freedom of Information requests have been denied, written requests have been denied because it is embarrassing
The problem of course with the Fusiliers is they are not part of the untouchables, insert your own very well known names here, and there is a referendum on Scottish independence coming up. Hence 2nd Battalion RRF, the Green Howards, Staffords and Royal Welsh get a kicking whilst the Royal Regiment of
Fiji Scotland get a free pass.
Hard not be cynical
We all know the issues, we all know reductions were inevitable, defence is changing and other Regiments/Corps have accepted disbandments without the high profile campaign being waged by the Fusiliers, but fair play to them.
