The Chinese media has taken a surprise swipe at the performance of the J15 in carrier trials complaining about the lack of weapons and fuel capacity from the aircraft on a ski jump carrier. The Russians had the same issue with the SU33 and ultimately scrapped it in favor of the lighter less capable Mig29K.
I have always thought that the STOBAR carrier was a failed concept with many of the limitations and costs of the conventional carrier with none of the benefits of increased payload.
So it now seems that China is subject to the same laws of physics as the rest of us and we may not have to worry about Chinese Aircraft carrier airpower for a few more years. The same article hints that the new Chinese carriers will use Electromagnetic Catapults to over-come the disadvantages of the J15. This will be interesting to see as the USA has spent a fortune on achieving this and it has a major lead in such technology. Arguably it’s also still having some difficulty itself with the system.
If the Chinese are messing around with EM instead of steam it might yet be a while until we see them deploying large carrier air wings.
