Saw this online earlier, well worth sharing.

Lots of really interesting information and all the newly released archives from 1982. They have only been recently uploaded and aren’t in a text or searchable format yet but fascinating nonetheless.

Some fascinating snippets there – firstly costings showing the decision to save Invincible had been costed before the war had ended. then the assumption that there would be 4 x Type 22 Frigates purchased to replace the 21s and 42s.

Also, the lovely line that there was a cover story for black buck raid diversions as ‘being on a maritime reconnaisance mission’!

The 10 Jun “UK EYES” FLASH traffic from DA in Paris showing that even that late, the Peruvians were in France purchasing AM 39 and Etendards.

There is also the valdectory from the British Ambassador to washington, with his explosive take of just how the US supported the UK…

I particularly liked the UK ambassadors comment about a named state department offical, referring to him as a Facist, and a US Minister as a fool…

@Falklands: No.10 record of telephone conversation (MT-Haig) [full transcript of second call: further discussion of UK use of Ascension Island] [declassified 2012]

Snippets of MT trying to put things right
“…from the outset you had not accede to requests that would go beyond the scope of the pattern of co-operation, and then you went on to say that the use of Ascension had been restricted accordingly.
“…it is our island and that will be the reaction of the British people. It is our island and the dispute is about our islands.”

GAUD …… The State Department’s thought process was shabby, it really doesn’t understand the phrase ‘whats good for the goose….

Unless you are Japan, Germany, or China (perhaps Saudi and Russia because of its ICBMs) then you are little people and the US doesn’t really care. Has been like that for decades.
