Think Defence hopes to start sensible conversations about UK defence issues, no agenda or no campaign but there might be one or two posts on containers, bridges and mexeflotes!
Well, as with aviation, anything big and complex has tinkering probs; lest they happen now and are resolved rather than when more is at stake. The ‘secret repairs’ thing is a lil far fetched.

Media hype. Shaft bearings can fail, not impossible, she has been at sea since 2007. Not a story really. Propulsion issues suggested later in the article are pure first-of-class teething issues and again are hardly newsworthy.

How does this post “get people talking about defence issues, nothing more, nothing less”
It’s a mechanical breakdown, which never happens to ships of the light blue air navy of course.
Unless the suggestion is that the Navy is useless / T45 is a pile of junk / I wouldn’t trust it to carry my lovely Storm Shadows …

This is someone talking about the issue which I believe is a point proven

I’m going to second Chris on this and say that hé seems to be his own worst enemy

How about the other T45 story today – commissioning of Dragon?

“How does this post “get people talking about defence issues, nothing more, nothing less”?”
Well first of all, the first post linked to in the article is about HMS Daring on deployment in the middle east, flying the flag. That’s a defence issue.
Secondly, the story raises the question of whether this is just a minor routine mishap that occassionally happens or whether it’s a more serious issue. The knowledge gleaned from more informed commentators helps us all going forward.
Thirdly, it gives us a chance to look at and question defence journalism in the national media, and whether we think it’s any good or not.
My guess, Ichabod, is that the only reason you disapprove of the article is because this is a story about the Navy with negative connotations.
Or in other words once again you’re bringing your own, very thinly veiled, service centric bias to bear despite stating in your very first post on TD that you felt such biases were key to disrupting serious defence debate.
Thus once again undermining your own argument.

Good points Chris.B., well made … of course “secret repairs” are more likely to get attention in the general press than a positive story.
What is the answer on influencing the modern media? I guess the defence forces have always maintained a cadre of friendly journalists whom they can place pre-planned stories with – but how can they stop/blunt wildfire stories (like “they took my ipod” …)?

Its not secret repairs – its a routine repair of something which the News has made out to be secret. RN ships and every other ship in the world has breakdowns which need repairs to be done. The difference is most nations dont have media which delight in doing their own country down by turning a minor issue into a national disaster.

Whats new? All big new things have problems, my dad has told me countless number of times Invincible had some shaft problems from launch. Portsmouth news is useless anyway, trying to make a story sound worse than it is, shame they cant report anything negative on portsmouth fc former or future owners.

Ah Mike Powell again. He is not the worst defence journalist out there by a long shot, but he does like to over-dramatise things, expecially where T45 is involved. He got a bit shafted by the MOD press office a year back and there is a suspicion that he still wants his revenge!
A bit of a non-issue this. The secretive part comes from the fact that not only are the navy sick and tired of journos slagging off their boats, they also don’t want people thinking Daring is vulnerable. Not that she is there to wave the flag/sea vipers at the Iranians or anything…
