The Ministry of If’s, But’s and Maybe’s

Whilst we all know that election promises aren’t really worth anything it is going to be interesting to see how things pan out in the coming months and compare those promises made in opposition with the realities of government.

I will maintain this over time but this is version 1

PartyPledge or PromiseReality
Lib DemWith strong Treasury involvement, review all major defence procurement projects through the SSDR to ensure money is being spent effectively. We will not purchase tranche 3B of the Eurofighter.Mo news on 3B but there will be strong treasury involvement in the SDR
Lib DemRule out the like-for-like replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system. At a cost of £100 billion over a lifetime it is unaffordable, and Britain’s security would be better served by alternativesTrident replacement has been confirmed but value for money will come under greater scrutiny
Lib DemReinvigorate Franco-British and wider European defence co-operation to ensure procurement costs are kept low.Unclear, no real news or indications yet
Lib DemGive a pay rise to the lower ranks so that their pay is brought into line with the starting salary of their emergency services counterparts. The budget has placed a pay freeze on all ranks except those on £21k or less, which is more or less Lance Corporal and below. Those under will get a few hundred pounds increase

    Slighhtly off topic but

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/7875855/Afghanistan-British-troops-to-hand-over-northern-Helmand-to-US-Marines.html

I’m sure I said before the election that if the Tories won, we’d probably stay in Afghanistan, but we’d give up day to day patrolling.
Be interesting to see what effect a Mobile Brigade could have in Afghanistan.

Re Trident – like-for-like replacement hasn’t been confirmed (some reports say it has, others that it hasn’t – which means it hasn’t). The cost alone is likely to knock this on the head, plus the realisation that there’s not much point buying a Cold war system.

Hmm, two posts seconds apart both on how trident should be cut.

Theres a 62 comment long thread on trident if your not trolling.
