In all the horse trading that accompanies the Conservative and Liberal Democrats rush to power one wonders if trident appears anywhere on a list of things that cannot be negotiated on?
I predict;
No decision on a Trident replacement but that it will be included in the forthcoming Strategic Defence and Security Review.
I predict that you’re wrong, the decision has already been taken and funding allocated in future fiscal years, the Tories wont include it in an SDR and Clegg wont bring it up.
I just hope FRES tracked gets binned, we have enough chassis types to be working with and plenty of people wanting to work on lines to build them.
Sorry Admin, you were wrong. Trident has been confirmed, however they have committed to scrutinise the project carefully for cost efficiency.
Easily done, hop into bed with the Yanks
I bet Trident will get looked at for a while and the possibly judged to be the only realistic option in terms of viability and most likely cost. This looking at will inevitably cost money to carry out and delay the program so inflating costs even more, business as usual then.
Grey,
I am sure you are correct. They will ask the Navy what it wants, agree the budget required to deliver it and quietly get on with it.
We will almost certainly have a four boat strategic missile submarine fleet armed with MIRVs organised on exactly the same lines as today. Period.
There is not so much the requirement to design completely new systems, simply to renew the depleted equipment we have already. Ships usually run for 25 years, submarines perhaps less.
We can all rest easy about Trident now.
