There have been a number of leaks of the first draft of the US Quadrennial Defense review that reveal the Pentagon’s thinking about equipping for future conflicts.
The review seems to make little by the way of radical recommendation but details some force and equipment changes such as;
- Increase in riverine forces
- Expansion of long range strike capacity for the USN
- Increase in vertical lift for the Army
- Re-rolling of some existing heavy units to the medium weight Styker configuration
- USAF to form light attack and utility units to support greater overseas training role
- Greater use of UAV’s
Business as usual then, with a a spot of tinkering around the edges.
Let’s hope the UK Future Defence Review is more radical and willing to face up to the new security challenges facing the country.
