Best British War Films – The Longest Day

Apologies to the makers of Saving Private Ryan, Das Boot, Cross of Iron and countless other great war films but this one is for the Brits only. Stiff upper lips, gritty realism and tally ho’s all round.

Film Description
An account of the events surrounding the Allied invasion of the beaches of Normandy during D-Day, June 1944. Seen from every angle, including that of the Germans, who were totally overwhelmed by the size of the Allied armies thrown against them.

Best Bits
Settle down for a long film with almost all the Hollywood stars of the day. Documentary like in it’s accuracy, drawing expertise from all participants in the operation, allied and axis alike, it’s a cracking film.

No messing about with everyone sounding the same, the Germans speak German, the French speak French and so on. The piper who accompanied Lord Lovat was the Queen Mothers personal piper and Richard Todd, who played Major John Howard (leader of the assault on Pegasus Bridge) actually took part in the same operation.
